A BD20 MILLION state-of-the-art shopping mall will be built in Hidd, it emerged yesterday. This is in addition to a five-star hotel and multi-storey apartment block in the same area.

The mall project is being developed and promoted by V K Universal Property Management Company on land leased from Al Hidd Club.

Work on the four-storey complex is expected to take 18 months to complete, company chairman Varghese Kurian told the GDN.

"This mall of international standards will comprise a basement and ground floor, as well as a first and second floor," said Mr Kurian.

"The BD20m project is expected to be completed in 18 months from the date of obtaining approvals from the authorities.

"It will prove a great boon to the residents of Hidd who have felt the need for a shopping mall for a very long time."

Mr Kurian signed the mall agreement at the club with General Organisation for Youth and Sports (Goys) planning and follow-up director Shaikh Abdulla bin Rashid Al Khalifa, in the presence of club chairman Yousif Al Malood and honorary chairman Ahmed Al Musallam.

The main contractor for the project will be Al Namal Construction Company, one of Bahrain's major construction companies.

Al Namal has already constructed several landmark projects including a multi-storey car park complex in the Diplomatic Area, Ru Ru Tower, Ramada Palace Hotel and Wadi Mall.

Some of its ongoing projects include malls in A'ali and Isa Town.

V K Universal Property Management is also investing in and promoting a five-star hotel and multi-storey apartment block on land leased from the Industry and Commerce Ministry in Hidd, said Mr Kurian.

Details of that project will be unveiled shortly.

"Since its inception, V K Universal has been in the forefront of real estate development as promoters and developers - ranging from multi-storey buildings, office towers, to commercial complexes," said Mr Kurian.

These include three towers of 17 storeys each, a 20-storey office tower and two 43-storey buildings - all in Juffair - in a joint venture with a leading bank and financial institution.

"We are committed to the development of Bahrain," added Mr Kurian.

"The wise leadership and stable environment make Bahrain an ideal place for investment. "With its strategic location as the centre of the Gulf region, Bahrain has the potential to become the shopping hub of the region." soman@gdn.com.bh
